Ultra-rare Colt Whitneyville Hartford Dragoon (2nd Type), S/N 1200. This rare Whitneyville shows full early address and thick forcing cone probably from a reduced Walker barrel. Also thick Walker type guard and iron backstrap with cartouched grips fitted to this iron backstrap likely both from salvaged Walker or returned parts (Backstrap shows C and grips show 28 denoting original Walker numbers). The Colt’s patent marking and U.S. are at the center of the frame and identical stamp to pistol S/N 1215 and 2nd contract or Fluck Dragoons. The ramrod is not numbered and a trace of an assembly number is partially visible but not legible inside the ramrod well. The ramrod catch and spring are period replaced to navy style. The revolver remains in very good condition with dark patina and traces of finish mixed in the brown. The frame shows silvery colors mixed into patina. The grips are good to very good other than large chips from each inside “toe”. The aforementioned cartouche is 30% visible or right side. All matching visible serial numbers except ramrod which shows no number but patina matches perfectly. The action works well and the edges are crisp. The rarest variation in Walker Dragoon series with 50 or less authentic specimens recorded by collectors and about 240 produced making it 4x rarer than a Walker. It would be hard and very expensive to improve on this Ultimate Colt Rarity. (Antique) Est.: $20,000-$40,000
