Fancy raised craved gold age Kentucky rifle signed “D. Cooley” of Adams County, PA. See pages 501-595 “Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in its Golden Age” and in particular illustration No. 37. The rifle is in as found out of the attic condition and is a recent find from southern California estate. The rifle measures 58 ¾” overall with a 42 ½” swamped or flared barrel of approximately .46 caliber rifled. Dark brown patina finish that is uncleaned and dark with some pitting around the firing area from use. The lock is replaced (Possibly at the time of the conversion) and is a close but not exact fit that was definitely used during working life in the 19th century. The stock is profusely raised carved and raised scroll around the cheek piece area extending onto the wrist area and 10” being almost the entire length of the left side of butt stock. Carved around the tang and right side of the wrist in front of patch box. Molded around the lock and incised carving in front of the lock. Raised carved (worn) behind the rear ramrod finial. The stock is generally very good and shows losses around the lock from firing and use (Also behind the hammer). The pierced patch box is of generous size and secured by 9 screws with light engraving matching to the side plate secured by 3 screws. 10 silver inlays around 6 barrel keys, at wrist, cheek piece (Star), and hearts at the back of each side behind the lock. The brass is completely as found and not cleaned. The wood shows no restorations or repairs since 19th century with just normal wear from carry west and carving is well defined. An important Kentucky with many similarities to John Armstrong in its decoration. (Antique) Est.: $12,500-$25,000
