VIRGINIA STATE MILITIA BUTTONS. This group represents buttons mfg. before the Civil War & used by Virginia State Forces fighting for the Confederacy. They all feature various renditions of the State Seal & motto of Virginia. All buttons have full straight shanks.
1) VA-2-A. The reverse is marked, “YOUNG . SMITH & CO * NEW.YORK * “. CONDITION: button retains nearly all of its original gilded finish.
2) VA-2-D. The reverse is marked, “YOUNG.SMITH & CO . NEW.YORK . “.CONDITION: button has a mellow brass patina w/ traces of original gilding.
3) VA-4-B2. The reverse is marked, “W.H . HORSTMANN & CO . NEW YORK . “. CONDITION: button retains areas of its original silvered finish.
4) VA-7-A. The reverse is marked, RMDC “MITCHELL & TYLER . RICHMOND.VA. “. CONDITION: button retains nearly all of its original gilded finish.
5) VA-15-B. The reverse is marked, “HORSTMANN & ALLIEN . NY . (rays)”. CONDITION: button retains much of the original gilded finish.
