Goache on artist board signed lower left “Charles Napier Hemy” and dated 1900. Also signed and title on reverse “On Crabbing Ground, Falmouth”. Also dealer or exhibition tag dated 1904. Measures 18” x 27” image only. Hemy studied at Newcastle school of art with William Bell Scott. Inspired by John Ruskin and pre-Raphaelite painters. Also studied in Antwerp under Baron Hendrik Leys. He exhibited at England’s Royal Academy in 1869 and was elected to full membership in 1910. He lived in London and Falmouth, England. He completed many nautical scenes due to his proximity to the ocean and ships. Before his death in 1917 he exhibited over 80 time at Royal Academy and his works were heralded in his lifetime.
