Or documents chests. Two outstanding pieces with forged iron carrying rings. Elaborately carved with gold leaf decoration to front. The top chest measures 24 1/2" by 39". The bottom chest measures 32" by 40". Top and bottom are well matched with identical pulls and probably intended for use together although they do not have exact matching decoration. Conditions are unrestored with minor imperfections and slight damage. Provenance: Mohico Guyo Collection, Lima, Peru, related to colonial governors and early colonial founding family, to William "Bill" Scollard, to a major Southern California Collector's Estate. Varguenos were important to store important land grants, titles, deeds and documents that proved your identity in the world.
