1847 Grimsley Dragoon/ Mounted Rifleman& #39;s Saddle. Fine black leather with quilted padding covering the entire saddle from the pommel to the cantle. Brass moldings & amp; escutcheons with solid cast brass horseshoe shaped stirrups. Three saddle rings affixed on each side of the saddle.  The Underside of the saddle is composed of brown leather. The inner skirts are smaller than the outer skirts intended to protect the horse from chafing of the two girth straps. The saddle seat measures 21& #34; between the outside tips of the pommel to cantle and 39 in. overall height.

Thornton Grimsley, a saddle maker out of St. Louis, MO. This Military Saddle which incorporated the shrink-fit rawhide covered tree design patented in 1847. Grimsley in addition to improving the sidebar design had deep-seated trees and a very high cantle that were inspired by Spanish/Mexican saddles that were popular at the time. Grimsley saddles were used by General U.S. Grant, General Thomas Sherman and General Robert E. Lee. [See Caba, 1982: 35-45. See also Dorsey and McPheeters, 1999: 19-21.]

***Saddle leather is supple, void of any tears, cracking, or crazing. Shows moderate wear from handling & amp; use. All brass furniture and leather straps are in tact. Overall in excellent condition for its age***
