"Old Wrist Breaker" Ames Calvary saber w/metal scabbard. U.S. Mexican War/U.S. Civil War era. Ricasso stamped "U.S. N.W.P." (Nahum W. Patch, a civilian Ordnance Department inspector who verified military weapons between 1831 and 1849.) Reverse stamped "N.P. AMES, CABOTVILLE, 1847". (Nathan P. Ames manufactured swords at the Cabotville, Massachusetts location from 1837 to 1848.) Top of pommel is also stamped "N.W.P." and "W.A.J." (William A. Jones inspected U.S. military-issue blades, primarily around the 1840s to 1850s.) 35 1/2' blade with 24 1/2' wide fuller and 18 1/2' narrow fuller, blade has scattered dark patches of patina, no nicks or sharpening, markings are clear/readable, brass guard/pommel has turned a nice aged patina, the & wire from the grip are long gone with remnants of wire under the pommel cap, there is a crack in the wood grip. The two-ring steel scabbard is un-dented, turned a dark patina with age. Most likely used in the Mexican war (1846-1848) and the Civil War. Really not in bad shape for a two war used sword 179 years old.
