1862 DATED ENFIELD RIFLE MUSKET.

Cal. 577. NSN. Standard configuration of the most popular longarm imported during the Civil War, both North & South. 55” overall, 39” barrel Birmingham proofed, “1862 / TOWER” & crown without royal cipher. Birmingham, England produce the vast majority of Confederate imported longarms, though no CS proofs. The stock has BSA rondel and “BENTLEY & PLAYFAIR” stamped on belly and is mark found on some Confederate associated Enfields (The English Connection, p100). CONDITION: very good overall, “as found”, complete and original, missing rear sight. Iron has mottled patina with pitting. Brass furniture lightly patinaed. Retains original ramrod and sling swivels which are often missing or replaced. Stock sound with good markings, hand worn patina. Mechanics fine, clear bore with thin remaining rifling. This is nice honest example that presents well with pair of probable soldier initials “CI” carved rear of lock. (01-21116/JS). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200
