Indian Wars 1881 Pattern U.S. 47th New York Infantry Spiked Helmet. The black wool felt cloth-covered body is decorated with Infantry crossed rifle side buttons, round oakleaf spike base and fluted spike, and shield type front plate. Front plate has an American eagle on top, State of New York shield, the word ''EXCELSIOR'' in a band at the bottom, and separately applied numbers ''47'' in the middle of the shield. There is a small American shield device at the rear with a loop to retain the chinstrap. Chinstrap is a series of concentric circles woven together on a leather band. Around the bottom edge is a thin patent leather covering sewn to the body. Interior has a thin brown leather sweat band and a cloth lining tightly affixed to the body. Center top of the interior has a red leather roundel with maker's mark of ''J.H. McKenney & Co. ,141 Grand St. N.Y.''. Size is 6-3/4. There are two small vent devices on either side. Condition is very good with no damage to the outer black cloth covering, minor cracking to the leather bottom edge, and age toning to the brass fittings. Chinstrap is sound, with age toning to the metal rings. Interior shows age and scuffs to the green inner visors and center lining. New York fielded a lot of regiments in the Civil War, and the 47th Infantry saw service in many battles. Post-Civil War they had many militia regiments serving. This type of helmet was worn from the 1880's until the start of the Spanish American War. Est.: $500-$700.
