Colt Model 1860 Army Richards conversion to .44 Colt center-fire cartridge, S/N 2977 (all visible numbers matching); period inscribed on back strap “J.W. Davidson U.S.A.”. The metal surfaces show light cleaning to grayand scattered light to moderate pitting and erosion. The barrel address is good and legible and the cylinder shows about 30%-50%light scene. The grips have been cleaned or sanded and are slightlyundersized. The front sight has been slimmed slightly. The inscription is genuine to the 19th-century in our opinion and is hand engraved in script letters of the proper antique style. John Wynn Davidson was a West Point graduate, served in the 2nd U.S. Dragoons in the Mexican-American War, served on the Western frontier in many Indian battles and commanded the troops at Fort Tejon, California when the Civil War began.He was a brigadier General in the United States Army during the Civil War, commanding the 3rd Brigade during the Peninsula campaign and fought at Yorktown and Williamsburg. He briefly commanded the district of Southeast
