Model 1850 U.S. Officers sword and scabbard with knot and etched blade with fancy brass guard, pommel and mounts; inscribed on left side of metal scabbard “Presented to Capt. Thomas C. Kendall by the/Members of Co. B21st New Jersey Vols./July 1st, 1863”. The hilt shows a serious bend in the guard but is otherwise good with sharkskin grip showing some minor wear and aging with slight losses and good tight brass wire wrap. The scabbard shows most of its original blue/brown finish with some minor scratches and normal aging. The blade shows a standard etched type U.S. with American Eagle and is in good condition with just normal aging and slight erosion.The blade shows a “Clauberg, Solingen” marking. According to National Archives Service and Pension records (copies included in binder with this lot), Thomas Kendall enlisted as a Captain on Aug. 29, 1862 and on Sept. 15, 1862, he was commissioned into Co. “B”, 21st New Jersey Infantry. He was present at the Battle of Fredericksburg (Dec. 13, 1862) and fought at Salem Heights, VA where he was taken P.O.W. (on May 4, 1863)
