18TH CENTURY FRENCH HALBERD.

Overall length: 83". Head length: 14 1/4". Head width: 7 3/4". This early halberd appears to be on its original haft & is likely of French styling & mfg. The forged iron head consists of a spear point blade that rises nearly 7" from the 4 1/4" crescent shaped blade & the 2 1/2" beak. The socket measures about 3" long & the languets extend nearly 2 1/2" down the haft. The joint where the haft meets the head is surrounded by faded red cotton tassels. The octagon haft has the remains of a cloth covering and innumerable handmade domed brass tacks. A wonderful early weapon correct for a French and Indian War or Revolutionary War display with superb eye appeal. CONDITION: the entire head has a dark, overall oxidized patina. Wooden haft is quite solid. Cloth covering of the haft is approx. 35% & is quite tattered attesting to the halberd's great age. (02-17509/BF). $800-1,200.
