Antique German side x side shotgun, 16 gauge. The shotgun is in good overall condition with 34” Damascus barrels with a full-length solid rib, which have gone to a brown patina. The action employs a late 19th century Collath style under lever action. The action, fore end cap and tang are ornately engraved with a game scene and the rear of the breech is gold inlayed. The lever handle, trigger guard and butt plate are carved horn and free of cracks or chips. The checkered wood stock shows heavy wear and use with flattening of checkering and large repair on the left side of the wrist. On the right side of the butt stock someone has carved a score card of sorts with dates including 1861 and 1873 indicating the quantity and variety of game taken. The prior owner was clearly a prolific hunter. According to the consignor, this is not a muzzle loader but an early cartridge gun with a mechanism reminiscent of a pinfire. Est.: $900-$1,800.
