Sharps Model 1874 Sporting rifle, .40 caliber, 2-5/8” case, 30” octagon barrel, single trigger, wood stocks, S/N 162371, with factory letter confirming features and noting gun was invoiced at the Bridgeport factory on March 17, 1879 to N. R. Davis & Co., Cattle Breeders of Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory; the letter further states that “the Davis firm was acting as a straw buyer for the Freud brothers and/or F.A. Damman, gun dealers in Cheyenne, who at the time were experiencing financial problems, either individually or jointly, and had exhausted their credit with the Sharps Rifle Company. Several of the guns in this order are known today to be Freund-type conversions or bear the barrel stamp of the Freund brothers” (this gun does show such markings on the base of the front blade sight: “Freund’s Patent/April 17, 1877” and has a modified un-marked rear sight); overall good to very good condition with plum brown patina to barrel and traces of original case colors with some spots of silver tone on receiver; crisp action, good markings and overall good bore displaying some areas of light pitting. A great destination shipment with Freund marking on front sight; this one was there! (Antique). Est.: $5,000-$10,000.
