Colt U.S. Cavalry SAA revolver, .45 caliber, 7.5” barrel, brown patina to metal surfaces, very rare E.C. Wheeler “W” inspection on the frame, wood grips with “J.E.G.” cartouche visible on left side of grips as well as what appears to be “1878”, S/N 49605; overall good to very good condition with a good bore, crisp action, good markings and good grips; accompanied by a Colt factory letter noting delivery to the U.S. Government Inspector at the Colt plant on August 14, 1878, 200 guns in shipment. Also included is a Kopec letter noting various information including Kopec’s opinion that this revolver should be classified as a Colt “buy-back” example as among other information, Kopec states “the letters “U.S.” which were applied by the Ordnance Inspector at the time of Government acceptance have been skillfully removed from the left frame area leaving a depression which may be verified with a straight steel rule”. Kopec also opines that the revolver sustained some cleaning or light polishing and a thin coat of browning was then applied to the metal surfaces. The front sight has
