Colt SAA Ainsworth-inspected and condemned revolver, .45 caliber, 7.5” barrel, dark patina with scattered spots of erosion and pitting, wood grips with partial inspector’s cartouche on left side of grips, S/N 14333; working action, fair bore, good grips; accompanied by a factory letter confirming caliber with barrel length and type of stocks “Not Listed”; shipped to B. Kittredge & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio on June 5, 1876 10 guns in shipment. Also accompanied by a John Kopec letter which indicates his research shows this gun had been manufactured at the very end of the inspection period of O.W. Ainsworth; also that the letters “U.S.: had been skillfully removed by Colt’s from the frame area and although it appears that the revolver had been fully ordnance sub-inspected, and passed final U.S. inspection receiving the grip cartouche of O. W. Ainsworth, it was somehow passed by the military and sold commercially later. (Antique). Est.: $2,500-$5,000.
