19TH & 20TH CENTURY KNIVES.

1) BELT KNIFE. This 19th century belt knife was made from an earlier European infantry hanger. Overall length: 20 1/2". Blade length: 14”. Blade has a single narrow fuller at the top. Hilt is solid brass with an urn shaped pommel and diagonally fluted grip. Homemade leather sheath with a belt loop attached utilizing copper rivets. CONDITION: blade shows significant oxidation. Hilt has a pleasing dark mustard patina. Sheath shows moderate overall wear.
2) BOWIE KNIFE. Overall length: 21 1/2". Blade length: 16 1/4". Blade has a triple narrow fuller near the spine and a 6” false edge. S shaped brass cross guard with diagonally fluted 2-piece wood grip. No sheath. CONDITION: blade has a dark oxidized patina. Cross guard has an early mustard finish. Grips show notable losses and visible insect damage.
3) SIDE KNIFE. This knife was created from a cut down M1833 enlisted dragoon saber. Overall length: 18”. Blade length: 12”. The quillback blade has partially visible markings at the ricasso that read “N.P.Ames Cutler Springfield 1836”. Brass hilt stamped “JM” on the quillon. Wire wrapped leather grip. No sheath. CONDITION: blade has a dark overall patina with some oxidation. Hilt has significant bends to the guard and knuckle bow. Grip is approximately 60% intact. Wire is complete.
4) BELT KNIFE. Overall length: 16”. Blade length: 9 1/2". This knife is possibly cut down from a early to mid 19th century carving knife. Blade is unmarked. Hilt is made from antler with a brass pommel and silver ferrule. Homemade rough leather sheath with fringed edges. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina. Hilt shows moderate wear as does the sheath.
5) SIDE KNIFE. Overall length: 22”. Blade length: 16 1/4". A crude knife likely made by a local artisan in the 19th or early 20th century. Rough blade with a forged iron cross guard and simple turned wood grip. No sheath. CONDITION: blade has a dark oxidized finish as does the cross guard. Grip shows wear and age cracks.
6) BELT KNIFE. Overall length: 16 1/2". Blade length: 12”. This crude knife is made in the Arkansas toothpick style. It is likely of post-Civil War manufacture. Iron cross guard with wood grip. A sheath throat and tip are included. CONDITION: blade is heavily rusted. Hilt shows significant wear. Sheath mounts have a dark patina. (02-17458/BF). $600-800.
