Rare and Genuine 19th Century U.S. Patent Office Model ''Breech-Loading Fire-Arm'', Patent No. 85645 granted to J.W. Cochran on Jan. 5, 1869, consisting of a full-size rifle breech measuring 13.5'' overall (incl. rear tangs) crafted of steel; it has a hinged top lever with thumb-tab that opens the breech when raised for cartridge loading/extraction, a very long internal firing pin, right-side hammer, and the usual trigger/triggerguard arrangement. Device is rather heavy, professionally and well-made. Accompanying the model is a 3''x3.25'' manila card tag marked ''No. 85645/J.W. Cochran/Breech Loading/Fire-Arm Patented Jan. 5th/1869'', tied with a faded red ribbon, four pages of patent drawings and description, and a modern yellow tag regarding provenance from the Cliff Petersen Collection of U.S. Patent Models. Condition of the breech is very good, being overall unfinished aged gunmetal gray with scattered light oxidation/rust, the 1869 Patent Office tag quite fragile as expected, the rest fine. This patentee was the American inventor and maker of the famed early Cochran underhammer revolving turret rifles, John W. Cochran of New York City, as confirmed by the accompanying patent papers. Est.: $500-$900.
