Rare and Genuine 19th Century U.S. Patent Office Model, apparently for a top-loading rifle breech mechanism, consisting of a beautifully made (of varnished walnut) box-like device measuring overall 17'' long by 7'' high by 2.125'' wide, having an 11'' long rear hinged section that opens to reveal a sliding ''bolt'' (having eared brass cartridge extractors at front) operated by a right-side hand crank, and a 4.625'' long hinged front section having a 4'' tall brass top-loading cartridge feed mechanism including an internal spring-loaded two-piece trap-door apparently for dropping cartridges into the chamber. When closed for operation, the front and rear sections are connected by an internal hook located on top of the ''bolt.'' We are unsure of the exact purpose and operation of this device, but it is expertly made and intriguing to speculate as to its use. No accompanying Patent Office tags or paperwork to further identify it. Condition is fine having just occasional handling marks and retaining much original varnish finish; brass hinges and other components are secure, mechanism seems to function as designed, and it appears to be complete. A separate T-shaped wooden stand (apparently not original) comes with the model. Est.: $200-$400.
