2 CHINESE BOLT ACTION MILITARY RIFLES.

1) HANYANG MODEL 88. Cal. 8mm Mauser. S# 4Y306. Bbl. 29 1/4". Numbers match on receiver, bolt & bbl. Receiver is marked on top w/ Hanyang Arsenal banner & "30". Straight bolt handle. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. Inverted V front sight. Cleaning rod & bayonet are present. Rifles were based on the Model 88 German commission rifle but mfg. w/out the jacketed bbl. & given a wooden handguard which is not present on this rifle. Walnut stock marked on right side w/ lg. oval marking w/ Chinese characters. Vintage 3/4" leather carrying strap. CONDITION: stock has early arsenal rework finish w/ staining, wear & handling marks throughout. Handguard is not present. Metal has turned overall gray & patina w/ wear, oxidation & scattered spots of moderate pitting. Dark heavily oxidized bore w/ some visible rifling. (22-554/RW).
2) WWII CHIANG KAI SHEK NANKING ARSENAL MAUSER TYPE. Cal. 8mm Mauser. S# K1389. All visible numbers match. Bbl. 23 3/4". These rifles were mfg. at the Nanking Arsenal which was built up w/ German technical assistance originally to mfg. machine guns. Rifles appear to have been made here subsequent to 1937. These rifles are based on the Mauser Banner model w/ the M98 action & feature a straight bolt handle & provision for a bottom sling. Receiver ring is marked w/ "bow & arrow" in gear wheel which is the Chinese ordnance mark. Has oval Nanking Arsenal marking w/ "star" & dated "33-11" which indicates 1944 mfg. according to 'Arming the Dragon' by Goldsmith. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. Inverted V front sight. German style bayonet bar. Cleaning rod is present. All milled furniture. Upper band retained by cross pin; narrow lower band retained by spring. Matching hardwood stock set w/ "M98K" style hand guard. Flat steel buttplate. Stock is marked on right side below ejection port w/ 2 Chinese characters. CONDITION: stock has moderate wear, dents, staining & handling marks throughout. Metal has turned overall gray & patina w/ areas of light oxidation. Fair worn bore turning dark in grooves. Bbl. has bulge behind front sight. (22-654/RW). BOTH CURIO. $700-1,000.
