GRADE HATS.
1) GENERAL. A WWI period, full dress General’s visor cap reportedly belonging to Major General Campbell King who served during WWI as Chief of Staff of the 3rd Army Corps American Expeditionary Forces. He was awarded the Army Distinguished Service medal for service as Chief of Staff of the 1st Division in operations near Montdidier, the advance south of Soissons & in the attack on St. Mihiel & later as Chief of Staff of the 3rd Army Corps during the Meuse-Argonne operation. Hat has a black crown w/ black velvet band. There is a beautifully embroidered gold bullion eagle gracing the front of the hat along w/ gold bullion oak leaves & acorns completely surrounding the band & covering the visor. Gold chinstrap. Brown sweatband. Sweatshield reads, “ARMY NAVY EQUIPMENTS MEYER NEW YORK N.S. MEYER, INC. NEW YORK”. CONDITION: hat shows light wear overall & displays beautifully. There is minor wear to the top of the sweatband & scattered sweat stains on the liner.
2) OFFICER. An M1902 Army officer’s undress service cap. Crown is faded black w/ a black velvet band. Directly embroidered gold bullion eagle. Gold chinstrap. Bound, downturned visor & brown sweatband. Black polished cotton lining marked in the crown w/ an illegible maker’s mark that ends w/ “PHILADELPHIA”. CONDITION: crown is a bit faded & has a few minor moth nips. Sweatband shows expected wear. The remainder of the hat is quite solid & attractive. (02-15772/BF). $800-1,200.
