1) FRENCH/GERMAN. This is an example of a French or German infantry officer's sword likely date between 1780 & 1800. Overall length: 37 1/4". Blade length: 30 1/2". Blade has a single wide fuller with etching over the first 7 1/2" that includes military & foliate motifs. Brass hilt with a boat-shape guard below vestiges of a cruciform guard. Plain knuckle bow with screw attachment to the pommel. Slightly flattened bulbous pommel with a copper wire-wrapped grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray, cleaned finish with some evidence of pitting. Hilt has been cleaned but is beginning to acquire a mellow patina. 2) ENGLISH. A fine example of a pattern 1796 officer's dragoon saber. Overall length: 37 1/2". Blade length: 32 1/2". Blade has a single wide fuller with gold highlighted etching on a blued field over the first 11". Etching includes sprays of arms, a crowned "GR", a dragoon at the gallop, and foliate motifs. There is an etched mark at the ricasso that reads "H. Osborn Bordesley Birmingm". Steel hilt with plain crossguard & drop quillon. Spade languets with a chamfered knuckle bow. Faceted bird's head pommel & backstrap with ears on the side. Multi-faceted ferrule. Black leather wrapped wood grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with ample blue & gold decoration remaining. Hilt has a dark overall patina. Leather is nearly complete. No wire. (02-19865-2/BF). $800-1,300.
