2 EARLY NAVAL BOARDING AXES.
1) AMERICAN BOARDING AX. Overall length: 35". Width of head: 8 1/8". The construction of this ax is quite interesting w/ its iron reinforcing 5", dbl. riveted, collar securing the head to the haft. This construction would indicate possible American mfg. Haft appears to be oak w/ a knobbed end. CONDITION: iron collar & ax head have a matching dark oxidized patina. Haft shows honest moderate wear throughout but is free of breaks. (02-13350/BF). 2) BOARDING AX. Overall length: 40 1/2". Width of head: 7 1/8". This ax is likely British in origin showing similarities to known British axes. Head has a wide blade & sharpened pick. 2 "Ears" extend nearly 5" down from the top & each has 2 iron rivets securing the head to an oak haft. Haft has a lg. knob at the base. CONDITION: head has a dark, lightly pitted patina w/ cleaning near the edge. Haft shows various dents & dings & a few worm holes but remains quite solid. (02-13386/BF). $1,200-1,800.
