NO MAKERS MARKS ON BBLS. 1) DOUBLE PATCHBOX. Cal. 40. NSN. Bbl. 29 3/4", oct. w/ under rib, fitted w/ U notch- semi buckhorn rear w/ elevator & German silver blade front sights. Top left flat stamped "CAST STEEL" at breech end. Unmarked lock has scroll engraving on breech end & hammer. Double set triggers fitted. Lightly figured walnut stock has pewter nosecap & is German silver mounted. Crescent buttplate has 6" return w/ spear finial. Trigger guard w/ finger spur has curl forming pistol grip. A cap box w/ fancy outline to surround is on left side of stock and matching patch box is on right. There are 12 other sm. German silver scroll shaped inlays around lock at grip & either side of forend. All have engraved scroll highlights. Plain hickory ramrod is held by 2 turned & faceted German silver pipes. CONDITION: fair to good. Bbl. & lock are dark brown patina w/ some pitting. Stock w/ considerable amount of original finish which is crazed, has numerous scratches & bumps. Fair to good bore, pitted. Triggers set, but hammer will not fall. (01-19021/MGM). 2) SPECIALLY MADE HALF STOCK RIFLE W/ PISTOL GRIP STOCK PERCUSSION RIFLE BY J.B. MCKEEN(?). This rifle was probably made for someone w/ a loss of one or two fingers on his right hand. Cal. 35. NSN. Bbl. 36" oct., w/ under rib fitted, buckhorn rear & silver bead front sights. There are no marks on bbl. Front spring lock w/ stamped engraving at rear & on hammer is hand marked "J.B. M. K. x AN" at bottom in front of hammer. (J.B. McKean of Mercer, PA who died in 1861?). Stock is of fine, fiddle figured maple. Features abrupt, deep pistol grip & sm. shadow line right hand cheekpiece. Iron mts. include dbl. set triggers. Trigger guard w/ spur. Crescent buttplate w/ 3" return. Round patch box w/ speer finial is on right side of butt. Stock terminates in pewter cap. Other decorations are German silver w/ speer extension to top of buttplate along w/ heart, tulip, & scrolled inlays at grip & on forend. Sideplate resembles a whale's tail & mounting escutcheons are scrolled. A very fine engraved flying eagle is on face of cheekpiece. CONDITION: fair to good iron parts w/ old brown to black patina showing silver highlights on sharp edges. Front portion of lock & patchbox cleaned to gray. Stock has oil refinish & repair through grip. Bore is fair. Rifling evident. Trigger set, but lock catches at half cock. Still, a very interesting rifle.
