2 IDENTIFIED CIVIL WAR GROUPINGS FROM THE 17TH

CONNECTICUT INFANTRY & THE 2ND CONNECTICUT ARTILLERY.
1) 17TH CONNECTICUT INFANTRY. This group includes items excavated together at a winter camp in Stafford Courthouse, Virginia. They include a stencil that reads "J. FLINN CO E. 17TH C.V." which means James Flinn, Company E, 17th Connecticut Volunteers. Found with this stencil is an infantry horn hat device along with the company letter "E" and "17" for the regiment. The group further includes a US box plate, an enlisted man's eagle button and a cape pin with a single Connecticut state button at one end. Unfortunately, Private Flinn was mortally wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. According to his muster report, he was shot on July 1st and died of wounds in the hospital on July 14. He is listed on the 17th Connecticut Volunteers monument at Gettysburg. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: muster reports and other documents pertaining to the service of James Flinn. CONDITION: all items have a dark excavated patina with some evidence of verdigris.
2) 2ND CONNECTICUT ARTILLERY. This group belonged to William Bigelow Sniffen of the 2nd Connecticut Artillery. Sniffen enlisted on July 31, 1862 as a Private and mustered out on August 9, 1865 after the surrender. This interesting group includes an artillery lanyard with original cord, spindle and hook. An ID disk that reads "WM. B. SNIFFEN 2D CONN BATTERY" on one side. The other side has a Federal shield with a Union banner surrounded by the words "AGAINST REBELLION *1861* ". The brass disk is attached to an iron watch chain. There is also a pair of goat skin gauntlets with the ghost of a brass "2" and 3 attachment points on the cuff of each gauntlet. There is a full standing view CDV of Sniffen wearing an enlisted frock coat with his kepi on a stand beside him having a "2" over crossed cannons on the crown. Sniffen wears a sword belt with M1851 sword belt plate, M1840 artillery saber and a pistol in holster. The CDV is backmarked "PHOTOGRAPHED BY PARTRIDGE Cor. Main and Bank Sts. BRIDGEPORT, Conn.". There are also 3 enlisted eagle buttons, a white buff leather thumbstall and a GAR medal from the Department of Connecticut. Finally, the group includes 2 envelopes addressed by Sniffen to his relative Charles B. Sniffen back in Connecticut. Copies of the letters are included as the originals were retained by the family. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a large blown up photo of the CDV of Sniffen. CONDITION: lanyard shows light overall wear. ID tag shows light wear with minor staining. Gauntlets show moderate wear. CDV is quite crisp. Thumbstall shows moderate wear. Buttons have a pleasing patina. Medal is as issued. Envelopes show moderate wear. (02-16852/BF). $900-1,500.
