2 INERT DISPLAY COPIES OF CIVIL WAR ORDNANCE.

1) CONFEDERATE WHITWORTH ARTILLERY SHELL. Approx. 9.5" in length w/ spiral grooved along mid section of shell, this was meant for the breech loading Whitworth 12 pound field gun. This 2 lb. shell currently is screwed into a wooden display w/ label "2.73 IN. WHITWORTH / BOLT / CONFEDERATE ARMY U.S. CIVIL WAR / SIEGE OF VICKSBURG, MISS. / MAY 19 - JULY 14 1863". CONDITION: shell has a lg. epoxy repaired brake on bottom of shell. Shell is coated w/ red oxidation & has pitting & recent handling marks throughout. Wooden display in very good condition.
2) KETCHUM HAND GRENADE. This approx. 5 lb. hand grenade is about 16.5" overall. The wooden stem & fins are not attached firmly to the grenade & appear to be repro. Marked on fins "PATENTED AUG. 20 1861". The 7.5" iron grenade has a "egg" shaped body w/ a 1.75" diameter nose fuse for activating percussion primer. CONDITION: grenade body appears to be repaired w/ no visible marks & pitting. Fins in good condition w/ crushed edges. (02-16274-1/MD). $400-600.
