2 LETTERS DATED 1816 TO CAPTAIN CHRISTIAN HAWKEN,

FAMOUS GUNSMITH OF HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND. Two wonderful early 3 page handwritten letters to Captain Christian Hawken of the Maryland Militia in Hagerstown, Maryland. One letter was posted from Georges Creek, Maryland and the other was posted from New Geneva, Pennsylvania. Both letters are written in the same hand. The letter from New Geneva costs 18 1/2 cents to mail and the other letter does not include postage on the front. Christian Hawken was a famous gunsmith and the father of Jacob and Sam Hawken who were famous for the Hawkens Plains rifles produced in St. Louis. The letters are both extremely easy to read and the writer seems well educated and possibly also in the Maryland Militia. CONDITION: the paper of both letters remains strong with no major defects. The addresses are strong and easy to read as is the content of the letters. (02-16805/BF). $300-600.
