The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is proud to announce the donation of one Desert
Bighorn Sheep Permit to the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo for auction to the highest
bidder at the 2023 EXPO in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Restoration of desert bighorn sheep in Texas has been an ongoing project since the 1950s.
Through the cooperative efforts of many conservation partners, including the Mule Deer Foundation,
private landowners and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, we have successfully
restored desert bighorns in Texas to the population levels of the late 1800s.
The permit provides the opportunity for one lucky winner to hunt for one desert bighorn ram
in the beautiful mountains of West Texas on one of the following State of Texas Wildlife Management
Areas: Elephant Mountain, Sierra Diablo, or Black Gap. Based on recent increases in
bighorn and permit numbers in Texas, the hunt will most likely occur between September 1,
2023 and July 31, 2024. All hunts are fully guided by TPWD personnel. The hunt will be for
10 days or until a ram is taken, whichever comes first. TPWD will provide lodging, meals and
on-site transportation.
ITEMSThe
hunter is required to possess a valid Texas hunting license (approximately $315 for a
non-resident). Proceeds from the sale of this permit will go to the Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department’s Desert Bighorn Sheep Program and used exclusively for desert bighorn restoration
and management in Texas. Proceeds from past hunts have paid for the restoration of
desert bighorns into sheep habitat which has been void of bighorns for over 50 years. Your support
is very much appreciated!
