2023 YUKON DALL SHEEP HUNT WITH MERVYN’S YUKON OUTFITTING

Hunt some of the best Dall sheep with one of the all-time great sheep guides, Tim Mervyn. This hunt will take place from July 30th to August 9th, 2023. This is a horseback hunt but could be changed to a backpack hunt at the request of the hunter. You will be the only hunter in camp and based out of a cabin with horses, a guide, and a wrangler. Spike-out hunting with pup tents is possible. Last year, harvest success was 100%. Hiking is required so hunters are encouraged to be in reasonable shape.

The Area
Located in Southwest Yukon outfitting concession #13 with 10,000 square miles of rolling and mountainous terrain with elevations up to 7,500 feet. This is open country and is generally dry and muskeg free, making for a noticeable lack of bugs and good horseback riding or hiking. Combined with alpine meadows and mountain basins, results in an ideal setting for hunting, fishing, and photography. This is a good area with a great sheep population. This area was the outdoor writer Jack O’Connor preferred location for hunting Dall sheep and most of his Dall hunting was done here in the late 1940’s through to the 1960’s.

The Sheep
The area is well known as an excellent producer of Dall Sheep. The sheep tend to be big bodied. Horns often have deep curls with heavy bases and carry their mass. Depending on circumstances it is possible to see large numbers of sheep in a single day. 40 inch rams are harvested on occasion. The average age varies between 9 to 10.5 years, but rams as old as 16 years have recently been taken. This area has the potential to produce fantastic
rams.

Trip Summary
Plan to meet Tim or Jen Mervyn at the Whitehorse airport on July 28th or 29th. Driving to Whitehorse via the Alaska Highway is also an option, 1.5 hours from Skagway, AK. Hotel check-in, rifle check, and bush plane flight to hunt area on July 30th will be arranged for you. You will meet your guide, wrangler and cook in camp. July 31st is a scouting day and opening day is August 1st. Horses will be used to access the sheep that can often be seen from camp, however your guide will take you wherever he believes the hunting is best so spike camps are likely. Return flight to Whitehorse is August 9th. If successful early, you have the option to leave early if you choose, but early departure flight is not included.
