1) M1850 STAFF & FIELD OFFICERS SWORD. Overall length: 39 1/2". Blade length: 31 7/8”. Blade is etched over 3/5 of its length w/ various military & foliate motifs. The blade is etched near the ricasso, “W.H. HORSTMANN & SON PHILADELPHIA”. Gilded brass hilt. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip. Gilded brass mounted iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray mottled patina w/ areas of dark oxidation. Etching remains generally clear. Hilt is loose & a bit misshaped. Traces of the original gilding remain. Grip & wire are complete. Scabbard mounts show traces of original gilding. Scabbard body has a dark overall patina. 2) M1850 FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD. Overall length: 38”. Blade length: 31 1/2". The blade has a narrow & a wide fuller & is etched over 2/3 of its length w/military, foliate & patriotic motifs including a lg. “US”. Gilded brass hilt. Wire wrapped leather grip. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium to dark gray patina w/ scattered areas of oxidation. Traces of original gilding remain on the hilt. Grip shows minor wear but wire is complete. Scabbard mounts show no traces of original gilding. Scabbard is a bit weak but badly flaked & remains in 1 piece. 3) M1850 FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD. Overall length: 38 3/8”. Blade length: 31 7/8". Blade has an interesting etching pattern consisting of flowers, military & patriotic motifs, an eagle & a vine encased “US”. Blade is etched near the ricasso, “C. Roby & Co W. Chelmsford Mass”. Gilded brass hilt. Wire wrapped leather grip. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light to medium gray patina. Etching is quite crisp. There are a couple of minor nicks to the blade. Hilt shows only traces of original gilding. Leather grip is a bit degraded but remains intact. Wire is loose but complete. Scabbard mounts show no trace of original gilding. Scabbard is badly flexed under the throat & has 2 black tape repairs above the drag. (02-14358/BF). $1,100-1,500.
