3 CIVIL WAR IMAGES & A SPANISH AMERICAN WAR TIN
TYPE. 1) A quarter plate tintype of a Union Artillery Private in a 9-button frock coat with an 1851 sword belt plate & a cap box. The soldier is holding a musket with fixed bayonet. He has a slouch hat with crossed cannons with a "6" above and an "H" below. The background is a camp scene with tents. The gilded brass frame & mat are mounted in 1/2 of a case. His pants are tinted light blue, and the buttons/insignia have been highlighted in gold. CONDITION: the plate itself shows some light creases with no other damage noted. 2) A ninth plate tintype of an enlisted cavalryman wearing a bummer's cap & shell jacket. The image shows his over-the-shoulder strap and he is grasping a cavalry saber in his right hand. Gilded brass mat & frame. CONDITION: the image is a bit oxidized, muting some of the contrast. 3) A CDV of Colonel John Talbot Pitman of the 9th & 11th Rhode Island Infantry. The view is full-standing with a double-breasted 14-button frock coat and kepi in his right hand. He wears an officer's sword belt rig and holds his foot officer's sword in his left hand. Interestingly, he appears to have a mourning band around his left arm. The back mark is "BRADY'S NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC GALLERIES". CONDITION: image is very slightly stained at the base and housed in a leucite holder. 4) A raw tintype of roughly sixth plate size depicting a Spanish American War era cavalry soldier with uniform pants, a blue shirt & khaki slouch hat. He appears to be wearing a sword on his left side and is leaning on a 45/70 caliber trapdoor carbine. CONDITION: image has wear & some oxidation. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18398/BF). $450-650.
