CLARK. L"on Danchin (1887-1938) was a French artist famous for his animal drawings, mostly featuring sporting dogs. Danchin was born in Lille (France) then moved to Chantilly (France) near Paris. His initial works were very popular in France, England, Belgium & the United States. Later in life Danchin moved to the French Flanders area, where he often hunted & found inspiration for the hunting scenes for which he is known so well. 1) Etching of an English Setter pursuing a European Eider duck. Print was limited to 500 impressions. This example is signed & numbered in pencil "Leon Danchin" and 440/500. Bottom right of print appears to read "Setter et Lawellyn" also in pencil possibly in the hand of Danchin. Upper left corner reads "Copyright 1932 by "La Gravure Francaise" 41, rue St. Georges Paris". Size of frame is 20 1/8" x 15 3/4". Image is 14"x 8 7/8". 2) Etching of a Gordon Setter swimming w/ a mallard duck in his mouth. Print was limited to 500 impressions. This example is signed & numbered in pencil "Leon Danchin" & 186/500. Bottom right of print reads "Setter Gordon". Upper left corner reads Copyright 1932 by "La Gravure Francaise" 41, rue St. Georges Paris". Size of frame is 20 1/8" x 15 3/4". Image is 14" x 8 7/8". Roland Clark was born in 1874 in the town of New Rochelle, NY. He attended the William Kellogg School & pursued formal art instruction at the Art Students League. He garnered international acclaim for his sporting paintings and etchings. He was a Federal Duck Stamp designer & is regarded as one of the finest sporting artist of the 20th Century. 3) Aqua tint etching of a broadbill duck landing in a marsh. Print was limited to 250 impressions. This example is signed & numbered in pencil"Roland Clark" & "136" following a printed "250/". The print has the name "Roland Clark" in the left corner & centrally below the image reads "New York, Published & Copyrighted 1940 by The Derrydale Press" w/ the title"A STRAGGLER BROADBILL". Size of frame is 22 1/2"x 26 1/4". Image size is 14" x 16 3/4". CONDITION: the Lewellyn setter print shows minor discoloration. The Gordon setter print has a slight water stain not affecting the image. The broadbill duck shows minor darkening. (02-11175/BF). $600-1000 for lot.
