3 EARLY ENGRAVED POWDER HORNS.
1) Overall length: 9". A fine early American powder horn likely made during the American Revolution. Original engraving on the side of the horn reads "CPT ? GLD ? REQWA 1ST REGT NYS MTA WESTCH ? CTY ? 1778 ?". Spout cap is missing but the wooden butt plug is in place. CONDITION: horn shows light to moderate wear and there is some chipping to the spout. 2) Overall length: 7 1/2". A flattened horn engraved "F. W. DONAUER." & "1803." on the sides. The butt is covered in horn and hand engraved "XIX". Wooden spout with brass lip. CONDITION: light wear overall. 3) Overall length: 6 1/4". A beautiful small horn profusely engraved with a plethora of birds, beasts & fish. There is a centrally located woman on one side and the initials "EH" can be seen near the butt. The style of engraving shows a Pennsylvania Dutch influence. The butt is covered with a piece of horn, and the spout is turned in the normal manner. CONDITION: light wear overall. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (02-19900/BF). $800-1,200.
