3 EARLY EUROPEAN SWORDS.
1) KNIGHTLY ARMING SWORD. Overall length: 38 5/8". Blade length: 31 1/4". A late medieval arming sword typified by its length & 1 handed grip. Plain tapered blade has a notable medial ridge. Heavy cruciform guard extends 6 3/4". Guard has 2 "ears" extending up the tang which are riveted in 2 places to secure it. Dbl. "dove head" pommel. No scabbard. Given the construction & rich, deep patina we feel this is a period arming sword. CONDITION: entire sword has a dark, moderately pitted patina. No remains of the grip can be seen. (02-13357/BF). 2) TWO-HANDED LANDSKNECHT TYPE SWORD. Overall length: 64 1/2". Blade length: 48". A wonderful, early Victorian copy of a massive 2 handed sword often referred to as Landsknecht type. Plain blade w/ a triple, narrow fuller extending 20 1/2" from the hilt. A single fuller extended to 34 1/4". There are 2 triangular points extending 2" from the blade 7 1/4" up from the hilt. Huge heavy crossguard extending 17 1/2" across w/ oval loops front & back form the guard. Lg. lobed iron pommel. Leather covered grip w/ 5 raised rings. An exceptionally well executed, impressive rendition of a very early 2 handed sword. CONDITION: blade has an overall dark patina as do the iron parts of the hilt. Leather is complete but shows minor scuffs & scrapes. (02-13359/BF). 3) CINQUEDEA TYPE SWORD. Overall length: 24 1/4". Blade length: 17 3/4". The Cinquedea was a civilian long dagger or short sword developed in Italy's northern provinces. It was popular from the 15th to the 16th centuries. Cinquedea literally means "5 fingers" & refers to the width of the blade at the guard. This dagger/sword appears to be a quality Victorian copy from the mid 1800s. Plain blade has a central fuller. Iron guard is down turned. Iron ferrules terminate a wooden grip. Lg. disk pommel w/ a partial gilded finish resembles a shining sun. CONDITION: blade has a dark oxidized patina as does the guard. Pommel & ferrules have a medium gray patina mixed w/ vestiges of gilding. Wood grip is worn w/ numerous dents & dings. (02-13393/BF). $1,200-2,000.
