1) M1895 Army “pillbox” hat in dark navy-blue wool with two 1-hole vents on each side. The front has an insignia for Company H of the 22nd Infantry. Bound leather visor with leather chinstrap terminated by small enlisted eagle buttons. Brown leather sweatband with a black silk liner. CONDITION: hat shows light to moderate wear overall with a few scattered moth holes. Sweatband is detached in areas but complete. Liner is slight frayed. 2) M1881 New York Infantry Officer's spike helmet for the 10th New York Infantry. Helmet body has a 4-piece black felt construction with a gilded spike & spike base combined with a New York front plate having a number “10” on the front. There is a gilded brass link chinstrap with infantry side buttons. The interior has a label that reads “RIDABOCK & CO, FORMERLY BAKER & MCKENNEY, NEW YORK.”. There is also a tag with the name “R.A. HAMILTON” who was likely the owner. CONDITION: helmet shows light wear overall. Interior is stained but complete. 3) M1881 Artillery Enlisted plumed helmet. The body of this helmet is made in 4 pieces, which is improper for a federal helmet, indicating a put-together helmet. All furniture, including the plume holder, base, front plate, side posts, & cord guides, are gilded brass. The interior has a name that appears to read “A.W. MELLAN. CO. B”. CONDITION: the helmet body has some moth damage to the felt. The interior shows moderate overall wear. PROVENANCE: from the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18948/BF). $500-750.
