3 ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR ERA BELT BUCKLES & 1
REPRODUCTION. 1)SWORD BELT PLATE. An officer's grade M1851 sword belt plate with the original keeper. The plate shows a spread-wing American eagle with a rayed background and a separately applied silver laurel wreath. The reverse has a narrow tongue. The buckle is stamped "554", and the keeper is stamped "94", but the fit is quite good. CONDITION: light wear overall. 2)SWORD BELT PLATE. An enlisted grade M1851 sword belt plate with no keeper. The plate shows a spread-wing American eagle on pebbled background with a rayed top surrounded by an integral wreath of laurel. The reverse has a medium tongue and is stamped "73". CONDITION: light wear overall. 3)US BUCKLE. A nice example of a Civil War period "US" oval belt buckle with spade hooks on the reverse. CONDITION: the buckle shows some indication of being excavated, or perhaps an early battlefield find. The face has a dark patina, and the reverse has oxide on the lead. 4)US BUCKLE. A small version of a reproduction "US" oval belt buckle, popular from the Mexican War to the dawn of the Civil War. Buckle has non-military loops on the reverse. CONDITION: 15% of the brass face is missing. The balance of the buckle shows moderate wear. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18396/BF). $450-600.
