4 PLUG BAYONETS.
1) Overall length: 12 1/2". Blade length: 8 1/2". A simple plug bayonet possibly of American manufacture. The iron blade has a raised medial ridge and was possibly made from a spontoon. Turned wooden hilt with an iron pommel cap. CONDITION: blade has a dark, oxidized patina. Hilt has minor insect damage. 2) Overall length: 11 3/4". Blade length: 7". Plain, flat, tapering iron blade with a brass ferrule at the top. Turned wood hilt with brass pommel cap. CONDITION: blade has been sharpened many times and appears to also have been used as a knife. Blade has a medium gray patina. Hilt shows light wear. 3) Overall length: 16 3/8". Blade length: 11 1/2". Blade has a raised medial ridge with a turned iron crossguard. There is an iron ferrule with a 5/8" wide bone ring. The remainder of the hilt is made of horn with a brass pommel cap. The crudity of this bayonet indicates possible American manufacture. CONDITION: blade has a dark patina. One side of the crossguard is missing about 3/4". Hilt shows moderate insect damage. 4) Overall length: 17 1/2". Blade length: 11 1/2". We feel that this bayonet is a late 19th century rendition of an earlier style. The flat knife like blade is unmarked. It has an iron crossguard with an aluminum ferrule & turned wooden grip. The end of the grip is finished with brass held on by a spherical iron pommel cap. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with light wear over the rest of the bayonet. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (02-19914/BF). $1,000-1,400.
