4 WWII GERMAN FOLK ART CANES & 1 SWAGGER STICK.

1) CANE. This carved wooden folk art cane measures 37 1/2" overall & has a conical brass tip. The body of the cane depicts a snake slithering up the shaft of the cane. Below the handle is a 4" carved area that reads, “11.PZ.D” & “5 Mai 45” with a panel depicting a warrior wielding a sword & an opposite panel depicting an edelweiss flower. Above the carved panels is the word, “FiA” on a raised ring. The pommel of the cane is carved in the shape of a lg. ball. A rare motif cane for a member of the 11th Panzer Division. CONDITION: cane shows light to moderate wear overall & remains quite solid.
2) CANE. A carved wooden folk art cane measuring 36" overall with an iron tip. The body of the cane shows a ribbon wrapping around the cross hatched body of the cane. The ribbon is relief carved, “1/SS - Pz . Gren . Ret . 25 Stubaf-U-Kr . Hans Waldmuller”. Above the crosshatching is a carved shield depicting the insignia of the 12th SS Panzer Division "Hitlerjugend". The cane simply swells towards the pommel. Lieutenant Colonel Hans Waldmuller served with the Waffen SS from as early as 1934 until 1944 when he was killed by Belgian Resistance fighters. He was awarded the 1st & 2nd Class Iron Crosses & was awarded the Knight’s Cross for bravery during the Battle of Normandy. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of information on Lieutenant Colonel Hans Waldmuller. CONDITION: cane shows light wear overall with oxidation on the iron tip.
3) CANE. A carved wooden folk art cane measuring 36 1/2" overall with a brass & steel tip. The entire shaft of the cane is plain but relief carved, “M Jr. WALTHER GERICIKE POLEN 1939 . DANEMARK und NORWEGEN . 1940 . NORMANDIE . 1944 BELGIEN . HOLLAND . 1940 . KRETA . AFRIKA . RUBLAND CASSINO”. The pommel of the cane naturally swells to nearly a sphere with the front of the pommel depicting a 1st Class Iron Cross & the rear of the pommel depicting an Army Fallschirmjager badge. Oberst Walter Gericike was a well decorated paratrooper & wore the “CRETE” cuff title. He was awarded the Iron Cross 1st & 2nd Class, the German Cross in gold & the Knight’s Cross with oak leaves. He was a battalion commander during the Battle of the Netherlands as well as the Battle of Crete. He later commanded Fallschirmjager Regiment 11 & fought in the Defense of Anzio. After the war, he became a Major General in the West German Bundeswehr. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of information on Oberst Walter Gericike. CONDITION: the cane shows light to moderate wear & obviously saw significant use by its owner.
4) CANE. A carved wooden folk art cane measuring 36" overall with a brass tip. The top 2/3 of the cane is relief carved with a ribbon bearing the inscription, “ERNST HAUSSLER . SS . SEUbaF . u BTLS . Kdr . II / SS Pz Gren Rgt 5 . ‘THULE’ ”. There is a series of carved V notches alternating with the ribbon. Below the pommel is a 1 1/2" band, relief carved, “15.3.43.”. The pommel of the cane appears to be formed from a root & is carved with a death’s head device on the butt. Colonel Ernst Haussler of the Waffen SS served at Dachau between 1936 & 1939. He then transferred to the Totenkopf Division & went on to command the division later in the war. His awards include the Knight’s Cross, the German Cross in gold, the 1st & 2nd Class Iron Cross & many other awards. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of information on Colonel Ernst Haussler. CONDITION: cane shows light to moderate wear overall.
5) SWAGGER STICK. A folky, carved & wrapped swagger stick measuring 18" in length. The body of the stick is wrapped in leather over 15 1/2". The top of the stick is carved horn in the shape of an animal head with red eyes. The back of the animals head is carved with SS runes. CONDITION: leather is dry & a bit flaked. There is a string whipping repair at the tip. Part of the carving of the horn pommel is missing at the animal’s nose. PROVENANCE: Lifetime Collection of Dennis Ottaway. (02-15994(4)/BF). $2,000-2,600.
