SPIES OF NEW YORK CITY. Cal. 88 (6 bore). NSN. Bbl. 41" half rnd. , half oct. w/ under rib. Transitions through 16 sides & wedding band. Top flat at rear engraved "LONDON FINE TWIST". Breech plug w/ some scroll engraving is inlaid w/ 2 gold & 1 silver band. Birmingham proofs are on bottom under wood. Lg. back spring percussion lock engraved w/ scroll & bird scene as well "A.W. Spies" (Retailer in New York City from 1828-1878). Flat faced hammer is not engraved. Walnut half stock w/ German silver tip, is mounted w/ iron trigger guard w/ engraved bow & scroll grip, iron buttplate w/ long engraved top strap. Stock attaches to bbl. w/ 2 side bolts through oval German silver escutcheons. A cap trap is on toeline. Hickory ramrod mounts through 3 plain pipes & nicely filed iron thimble. CONDITION: bbl. has original twist finish showing under thin brown patina. Lock shows heat discoloration. Stock retains most of an old refinish w/ numerous marks. A 1 1/2" x 1/4" chip is missing from toe. Bore is good, lightly pitted throughout. Lock is good. A good example of a mid 19th century lg. bore water fowler.
