6 US SWORDS & A CIVIL WAR SHOVEL.
1) “CONFEDERATE” SHORT SWORD. Overall length: 24 1/4". Blade length: 18 3/4". This short sword appears to be made from an original Confederate blade. It was subsequently mounted to a post war hilt made up of a sm. piece of brass for a guard, a carved wooden grip & a post war Virginia button as a pommel cap. CONDITION: blade has a dark patina w/ substantial pitting. Hilt does show some wear. (02-14304/BF). 2) M1850 FOOT OFFICER. Overall length: 33 3/4". Blade length: 26 3/4". Plain blade w/ a single fuller blade topped by a single narrow fuller. Gilded brass hilt. Sharkskin grip. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina. Hilt has a dark patina w/ no evidence of gilding remaining. Grip appears complete but has been painted silver. Scabbard mounts have no gilded finish remaining. Scabbard has several electrical tape repairs & is in general poor condition. 3) NONREGULATION CAVALRY OFFICER. Overall length: 37 1/4". Blade length: 31 1/2". Unmarked blade is etched over 1/2 its length w/ various foliate & military motifs. Gilded brass hilt. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina. Hilt has a mustard patina w/ traces of original gilding. Grip & wire are complete. 4) M1840 CAVALRY OFFICER. Overall length: 42". Blade length: 35 1/4". Single fuller blade marked at the ricasso, “S.O. BUNTING JR PHILA”. Brass hilt. Wire wrapped grip. Iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray slightly mottled patina. Hilt is badly broken. No leather remains. Grip is badly charred as sword appears to have been through a fire. Scabbard has 1 significant dent & charring from fire. 5) M1850 FOOT OFFICER. Overall length: 36 1/4". Blade length: 30 1/4". Single fuller blade is etched over 2/3 of its length & marked near the ricasso “Ames Mfg Co Chicopee Mass”. The ricasso is stamped “US / GSC / 1861”. Gilded brass hilt. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a dark patina & etching is extremely light. Hilt retains areas of original gilded finish. Grip is worn & shrunk. Only 1 strand of wire remains. 6) M1850 FOOT OFFICER. Overall length: 36". Blade length: 30 1/4". Plain single fuller blade. Ricasso marked “Made by AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE MASS”. Gilded brass hilt. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina. Hilt has a mustard patina mixed w/ original gilded finish. Grip is heavily worn & has 2 strands of wire remaining. (02-14356(5)/BF). 7) CIVIL WAR ERA SHOVEL. Overall length: 38". This shovel is of a typical form & style known to have been used during the Civil War. It has a maker’s mark about halfway up the handle that is illegible except for a few letters that appear to read, “C.S”. CONDITION: iron has an oxidized patina. Wood remains quite solid.
