724TH ORDNANCE BATTALION FLAG.

3’ x 4’ double applique embroidered on red crimson field, circa 1951. This unit was first organized in 1942 as the 724th Ordnance Maintenance Company whose mission was the repair of all armament and combat vehicles of a division to which the unit was attached. This command was a component of the 24th Infantry Division and served with this command in all of the division’s battles in the Pacific Theater. These include New Guinea and at Leyte in the Philippines Campaign. The battalion and the 24th Division became part of the occupation forces in Japan remaining there until 1950.
When the North Koreans attacked South Korea the 24th Division and subordinate units were transferred to South Korea in June 1950 to help defend that nation. They were the first U.S. Army ordnance battalion to be committed to this new war. In 1951, the battalion’s designation was changed to the 724th Ordnance Battalion with the mission of the unit remaining the same; keeping the 24th Infantry Division’s weapons and vehicles combat ready.
In 1958, the 24th Division was transferred to Germany to help defend that nation during the Cold War. In an examination of the division’s Order of battle, the 724th Ordnance was no longer listed in the command. The flag of the 724th Ordnance Battalion is crimson which was first established as the color for this service branch in 1851. In 1902, the branch colors became scarlet and black but in the service the colors became crimson and yellow.
