9TH ARMOR TRAINING BATTALION FLAG.

3’ x 4’ double applique sewn green motifs on yellow field, gold fringe.
The 9th Tank Battalion was one of the last units raised March 1943 in the 20th Armor Division, deactivated 1946 at Ft. Campbell, KY. No history as to this battalion with any connection to 9th Tank Battalion, likely National Guard unit, circa 1950-1960, history obscure, but distinctive regulation size military contract flag.
While the U.S. Army used tanks of a French design and manufacture while fighting in World War One, the modern Army tank arm dates to 1930 when the Mechanized Force was established at Fort Eustis in Virginia. In 1931, the command and training for it moved to Fort Knox, Kentucky which had opened in 1918 as the training center for field artillery. In 1933, the 1st Cavalry Regiment (Mechanized) arrived at Fort Knox around which training and doctrine would commence. In 1940 the command was renamed Armored Force and in 1942 it was redesignated as Armored Command. In 1944, tis was renamed again as the Armored Center. After World War Two the center was deactivated but was reactivated a year later.
From this point on until the Armor school was moved to Fort Benning, Georgia in 2005 (beginning operations in 2010 with armor units arriving in 2011), Fort Knox was the home of Army armor and the training of officers, crew and formatting battle doctrine. In 1968, the 194th Separate Armor Brigade (now 194th Armor Brigade) was posted to Fort Knox. With the transfer of Armor to Fort Benning, this command and is sister unit, 316th Cavalry Brigade, handle the training of personnel for tank and armored cavalry/scout commands.
Today, Fort Benning handles primary armor training but some National Guard units also do so including Texas and Idaho who not only train American tankers but also those from other nations. There are also armor components in the Army Reserve that handle training. CONDITION: good-very good overall, bleeding of green dye onto field where folded as seen in photos.
