A FINE EXAMPLE OF THE HIGH QUALITY SXS SHOTGUNS
RETAILED BY WILLIAM SCHAEFER OF BOSTON WITH ORIGINAL ? CASE. Cal. 12 Ga. S# 2038. It appears that William Schaefer bought unfinished guns at home & from abroad, finished them in Boston & then retailed them for sale. Most of his offerings are very high quality & from maker's such as H A Lindner. This fine gun was likely sourced from Westley Richards. It has 30" Bernard twist steel bbls. engraved "WM R. Schaefer & Son Boston" on slightly raised concave game rib. Bottoms of bbls. stamped w/ Birmingham provisional & definitive black powder proofs for 14 Bore. "4170" is stamped on loop. Case hardened Anson & Deeley boxlock action w/ patent use # 2038 on water table features automatic safety & nickel plated dbl. triggers. Action utilizes Westley Richard's top lever system, however there is no third fastener to engage doll's head rib extension. Action engraved w/ 30% coverage very nicely cut varying size scroll w/in geometric borders. This scroll is also found on blued top lever, floorplate & trigger guard. Attractively marbled & lightly figured European walnut rnd. knob pistol grip buttstock measures 14" over original checkered horn buttplate. Side panels are checkered & flat top point pattern checkering is at grip. Oval is missing from toeline. Matching splinter forend w/ inset horn tip has roller friction release. MEASUREMENTS: BARRELS: bore diameter: right .721", left .724". Restriction: right .015" (Mod), left .016" (Mod.). Min. Wall Thickness: right .038", left .037", STOCKS: LOP: 14". DAC: 1 15/16". DAH: 3". Slightly cast off. WEIGHT: 7 lbs., 7 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in what appears to be original leather case w/ embossed line decoration on exterior & plated key lock. CONDITION: very fine, original. Bbls. retaining approx. 85% dramatic brown & silver pattern w/ some scattered flecking & silvering along sides. Action retains most of its original case hardening color that was never vivid as evident by gray appearance of water table. Action does exhibit some spotting. Top lever, floorplate & trigger guard retain most of their purplish original blue. Stock has over 90% original varnish finish w/ considerable craquelure & a few light marks & dings in finish. Checkering is lightly worn. Right bore very good to fine, shiny w/ 1 or 2 minor scattered pits. Left bore is very good w/ a considerable amount of scattered minor pitting. There are no noted dents or repairs. Action is tight. Mechanically good. Case leather is fine, still relatively light in color w/ some marks & dings. Exterior straps are replaced. Carrying handle detached & inside case. Interior cloth shows considerable insect damage. Label is very fine, lightly foxed overall w/ some folding & cracking at top hinge area of compartment.
