BAR BELONGING TO BREVETTE MAJOR GENERAL THEODOR AUGUST ADOLF KRAUSE. An interesting combination of awards to a Prussian officer that served extensively in the Franco-Prussian War. Awards include 1870 Iron Cross 2nd Class together with “25” jubilee oak leaves on ribbon, a circa 1880 Prussian Order of the Red Eagle 3rd Class with bow in gold & enamel, a 25 Year Officer’s Long Service Cross, an 1870-71 Campaign medal with 2 clasps reading “STRASSBURG” & “PARIS”, a commemorative Koniggratz Campaign Cross, a Centennial medal of reduced size, a Bavarian Order of Military Merit Knight’s Cross 1st Class in gold with enamels by Quellhorst of apparent 1880 mfg. Theodor August Adolf Krause was born on May 25, 1836 in Breslau in what is now Poland. He joined the Prussian Army in 1853 as a gunner in the 6th Artillery Regiment. Shortly after he was promoted to Officer Cadet with portepee. By late 1855, he had received his commission & was advanced to 1st Lieutenant on Feb 10, 1864. He then received a captain’s commission in 1868 & led the Artillery Dept. at Schweidnitz. He served in many capacitates in the Prussian Army until the summer of 1875 when he was appointed major & instructor. He was appointed Commander of the 1st Battalion of his regiment in the summer of 1878 & was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel 4 years later. In 1883, he was Commander of Artillery Regiment No. 11 & was promoted to Colonel in 1886. On Aug. 13, 1889 he was breveted to Major General & later that year was discharged from military service at his own request. CONDITION: ribbons all show light wear with the exception of the Bavarian Order of Military Merit that has moderate wear on its ribbon with minor fraying. On the reverse of the Order of Military Merit is a central gold lion that is missing 1 foot. PROVENANCE: Lifetime Collection of Dennis Ottaway. (02-16029/BF). $1,600-2,200.
