A FINE LATE VICTORIAN BRITISH ARTILLERY COLONEL’S

UNIFORM WITH TRIMMINGS, MESS UNIFORM, HELMET & ASSOCIATED TRUNK. This superb group belonged to a Colonel of artillery in the British Army. His dress uniform includes the tunic, belt, cross belt & pouch, helmet & sabretache. His mess dress uniform includes the jacket & vest. Also included is a swagger stick, painted tinned iron trunk, storage box & plume box.
1) TUNIC. The black tunic is piped in red down the front with 9 Royal Artillery buttons. The sleeves have intricate large gold bullion extending 11" up from the edge of the cuff. The collar has wide gold bullion tape all but covering a red collar. Each side of the collar has a silver bullion flaming bomb. The knotted shoulder straps have a crown with two pips indicating a rank of Colonel. The left breast has a 5 award ribbon bar consisting of the Distinguished Service Order, Order of Albert, India General Service, Queen South Africa, & a Long Service Award. The tails are trimmed with gold bullion & piped with red. They show 3 Royal Artillery buttons on each side. The bottom edge of the coat is unfinished & the entire interior is lined in black.
2) TROUSERS. Dark blue wool trousers w/ red stripes that appears to be unmarked.
3) BELT. The fine quality belt is completely covered in a woven gold bullion with a snake buckle in the front. Both sides of the buckle show an oval panel with a lion perched on a crown. The 2 headed snake buckle has the word “UBIQUE” on the front. The belt is backed in a fine grade black leather.
4) BOOTS. Black leather boots have permanently fastened stirrups w/ a disk rowel.
5) CARTRIDGE POUCH. An exceptionally high grade officer’s dress cartridge pouch with an intricate silver & gold bullion Royal Arms on the front. A ribbon below reads “QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT” in gold bullion with a heavily gilded cannon above. The cross belt is completely faced in gold bullion & features beautifully rendered & heavily gilded belt tip adornments.
6) SABRETACHE. The front of the sabretache has incredibly intricate & beautiful gold bullion decoration consisting of a large rendition of the British Arms over a laurel & oak leaf spray. Below the spray is a heavily gilded cannon over a large ribbon with the same motto as the cartridge box. The edge is bordered by a 1 5/8" wide bullion tape &the suspension straps are covered in still more gold bullion tape.
7) HELMET. A fine quality late Victorian high grade artillery officers helmet featuring a ball on top with an artillery front plate. Chain chinstrap with Tudor rose side buttons. The interior is green with a tan sweatband & red silk liner.
8) MESS JECKET. A black jacket with numerous small round buttons on the edge of the front. The entire jacket is bordered by 1" gold bullion that loops twice in the back. There is gold bullion decoration extending 8" up each sleeve & the bottom of the cuffs are red. The collar is red with silver bullion flaming bombs on each side. The knotted shoulder straps display a bullion crown with 2 large pips indicating the rank of Colonel. Jacket is lined in red cotton with red leather trim at the base.
9) VEST. The vest is red & has numerous small round buttons down the front. The vest is bordered by 5/8" gold bullion tape. There is gold bullion cord decoration approx. 4" up from the base. The vest is lined in red.
10) TRUNK. A painted iron storage trunk approx. 41" x 12" x 9" high. It is a lockable trunk with heavy duty handles on each end. The trunk is painted black with red hashmarks. The trunk contains a smaller box measuring approx. 12 1/2" x 9 1/2" x 4" high decorated in a similar manner with a red velvet interior for holding medals, insignia & personal items. The trunk also contains a metal plume box measuring 7" in height and 3 1/2" in diameter. It is decorated in the same style as the trunk & the smaller box.
11) SWAGGER STICK. The stick measures approx. 26 1/2" long. It has a silvered tip & a top that reads “WELLINGTON” with a lion. The body of the swagger stick appears to be bamboo.
CONDITION: overall the uniforms show light wear with scattered minor moth damage. There is a bit of wear to the rank insignia on the shoulder straps. The mess vest has somewhat heavier mothing than the other items. All bullion items are complete & show expected wear and tarnish. The red striped trousers have several sm. spots of insect damage plus sm. areas of light wear all of which do not detract from the appearance of this vintage uniform. Boots have light wear & notable scuffing along seams & edges. The trunk & boxes show wear to the finish but no notable damage. (02-18156/BF). $4,000-6,000.
