A REMARKABLE CONFEDERATE OFFICERS RED WOOL
KEPI IN THE FRENCH STYLE WORN BY CAPTAIN CUTHBERT H. SLOCOMB OF THE WASHINGTON ARTILLERY. A marvelous example of Confederate Civil War artillery officer's kepi made in the French style of red wool broadcloth executed in a tabby weave. There is a dark blue band of similar cloth and weave at the base of the crown. The kepi measures 5 5/8" from the lower rear edge to the top of the crown including the roll. It measures 1 3/4" from the lower edge to the crown in the front. The dark blue band is 1 1/8" wide. The diameter of the crown is 4 3/4". There are 2 rows of hand sewn 1/8" wide gold braid above the top edge of the band. 4 Sets of double strands rise from the band to the crown. The crown is encircled by a single braid of gold. A double strand quattrofoil decorates the top of the crown. The repeating theme of 2 rows of braid denotes the rank of captain. Pasteboard is used for a backing on the cap band and is possibly used as a stiffener in the crown. The cap is interlined with cotton canvas throughout the body. The kepi has a black cotton lining of a twill weave. No sweatband is present. The raw edged visor is black patent leather and is of single thickness. The 5/8" wide chinstrap appears to be black painted leather or possibly patent leather. The chinstrap is constructed in 2 pieces, 1 terminating in a brass buckle slide, the other terminating in a leather slide. No chinstrap buttons are present. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Les Jensen authentication letter. CONDITION: overall the cap shows light to moderate wear. There are a few scattered moth holes in the crown. The red wool body retains vibrant color but is a bit soiled. Gold braid is complete showing light tarnish throughout. The chinstrap and visor are a bit dry and show some crazing but nearly all of their finish remains intact. The visor is securely sewn to the body of the kepi and remains substantially flat. The pasteboard backing is intact but shows wear. Canvas is complete but shows notable staining. The black lining remains mostly complete but shows tears and is detached in several areas. The interior crown shows wear from years of hard service. Captain Slocomb’s kepi is truly visually impactful and exemplifies Confederate artillery officers kepis known to have been worn by the Washington Artillery.
