ABOLISHING SLAVERY , A RARE HIGH CONDITION

FRAMED BROADSIDE OF THE 13TH AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION. This is an engraved broadside depicting the joint resolution of the 38th Congress of the United States of America proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to abolish the institution of slavery. The short, but incredibly important, resolution is depicted on either side of a vignette that shows an African American mother, father and child clutching a cameo like portrait of Abraham Lincoln with a ghostly visage of Lady Liberty above. The document has facsimile signatures of Lincoln, Hamlin, Colfax, other dignitaries and each and every senator and representative who voted for the joint resolution. The resolution measures approximately 23" x 17 1/2" and is marked at the bottom of the border, "WESTERN BANKNOTE AND ENG. CO. CHICAGO". It is also marked on the lower edge, "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1868 by D. R. Clark in the clerk's office of the Northern District of the State of Illinois". CONDITION: this broadside has obviously been framed for many years as condition is far superior than most examples observed. It shows no tearing or water damage. There is some very slight discoloration spots scattered throughout the document. Printing is clear and unfaded, a truly excellent example of this scarce document. (02-17445/BF). $2,500-3,500.
