Cal. 45 ACP. S# 180682 (Colt frame mfg. 1917). Per "U.S. Military Automatic Pistols 1894-1920" by Edward Scott Meadows "The A.J. Savage Munitions Company was incorporated April 23, 1917... Arthur W. Savage, founder of Savage Arms Corportion, was the principle stockholder. His son, Arthur J. Savage, for whom the company was named, was also a shareholder.... An Ordnance Department contract, number P12303-2078SA, was let to the A.J. Savage Munitions Company on July 20, 1918 calling for 100,000 pistols at $14.00 each... The A.J Savage Munitions Company pistol contract was suspended on December 4, 1918 with no deliveries thereunder having being made. It has been assumed that the Model 1911 slides bearing only Colt patent dates and the letter S inside an Ordnance bomb logo were products of the A.J. Savage Munition Company. While this may be the case, there is no documentary evidence known to the author to support this contention... Regardless of their origin, these slides are usually found on World War I era receivers or on Colt manufactured replacement frames..." This pistol has a 5" Colt Type 5 bbl.
