AMERICAN COLONIAL OR BRITISH SPONTOON HEAD WITH

PARTIAL HAFT. Overall length: 71". Blade length: 8 1/4". Head length: 24". This spontoon likely dates from 1750-1780. The nearly flat blade has a slightly raised medial ridge and a bulbous base. The blade unscrews just below the lugs to aid in carrying, transporting and storing the spontoon. The lugs are plain with bulbous ends and measure approx. 1 5/8" on each side. Below the lugs is a 3 1/2" ferrule with raised rings. The languets measure 11 1/2" and are held to the haft with 4 bent over square nails. This tells us that the spontoon was rehafted sometime during its useful life after possibly being broken in battle. The base of the haft has a conical brass cover to facilitate grounding the haft. CONDITION: the blade and other iron components have a dark, lightly mottled patina. The bottom cap of the haft has a rich, mellow mustard patina. Haft is broken and separated just under 4' from the bottom but all parts of the haft are present and likely repairable. (02-17784/BF). $1,250-1,750.
