AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD DUTCH MUSKET WITH

FRENCH LOCK AND POSSIBLE NEW HAMPSHIRE REGIMENTAL MARKING. Cal. 77. NSN. Bbl. 42 5/8" held to stock w/ one spring retained & 2 driven on brass bands. Stock appears to be walnut & is further brass mounted w/ relatively plain triggerguard, typical scrolling sideplate & buttplate w/ long shaped top spur stamped “9-NH” & “2B6 1/2 B” (New Hampshire regt. 6th brigade?) Oval wrist escutcheon is stamped “No. III4”. Stock has typical raised carving around lock, side plate & bbl. tang. Right side has punch dot initials “HPO”. Lock w/ heavy chamfered plate w/ file decoration at rear is fitted w/ serpentine cock, inset faceted pan, unbridled friction frizzen & feather spring w/ bulbous & flame finial. Area in front of cock is stamped “M”, fleur-de-lis & “A” over “D.M” in a cartouche (Mauberge Arsenal). Sling loops are missing. Old tapered head iron ramrod is present. CONDITION: bbl. w/ old cleaning is now mostly smooth brown patina w/ some scattered pitting. Lock is dark gray w/ silvery highlights from cleaning. Stock retains an attractive old oil finish w/ hand worn highlights & is relatively sound w/ some losses & splits along bbl. channel. Brass is nicely toned. Lock does not fit mortise well & has replaced old cock which is too short along w/ its screw, which is too sm. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (01-20499/MGM).
